Isabela City, Basilan — February 4, 2026

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) successfully rescued two distressed fishermen after their motorbanca encountered dangerous sea conditions in the waters off Barangay Baluno, Isabela City, Basilan, on Tuesday.

According to the Coast Guard Sub-Station (CGSS) Malamawi, the fishermen were traveling from Zamboanga City to Isabela City, transporting ice chests filled with freshly caught fish, when they were hit by strong waves and rough seas. The worsening conditions caused seawater to flood their small vessel, placing their lives at risk.

To prevent the motorbanca from capsizing, the crew was forced to discard 14 ice chests of fish, sacrificing their livelihood for safety.

Upon receiving the distress report, PCG personnel immediately responded and located the struggling vessel. The team safely towed the motorbanca to CGSS Malamawi, where the fishermen were given first aid and medical assistance.

Authorities said the two crew members were in stable condition but sustained minor injuries on their finger and foot. These were promptly treated by the Coast Guard medical team.

For further evaluation, the fishermen were later transported to the Basilan Medical Center.

The PCG reiterated its commitment to ensuring maritime safety, especially amid unpredictable weather conditions, and urged fishermen and sea travelers to regularly monitor weather advisories before sailing.

“This incident highlights the importance of preparedness and timely response in saving lives at sea,” the Coast Guard said in a statement.

The rescue underscores the vital role of the PCG in safeguarding coastal communities and protecting the welfare of fishermen who brave the seas daily to earn a living.
