LUUK, SULU — A .45 caliber pistol used in a recent shooting incident in Luuk, Sulu was voluntarily surrendered on February 11, 2026, following the coordinated efforts of security forces and local officials, marking a significant step toward restoring peace and order in the area.

Authorities confirmed that the firearm, linked to a February 10 shooting in Barangay Kan-Bulak, was turned over through the joint initiative of the 101st Infantry “Sajahitra” Battalion, the Luuk Municipal Police Station, and barangay and municipal officials.

Firearm Linked to Fatal Incident

Investigators said the surrendered pistol was used in the attack that resulted in the death of a resident of Barangay Lambago, sparking concern among community members and local leaders.

The surrender was facilitated by Alpha Company of 101IB under the leadership of Clent Mark C. Gaitera, in close coordination with Luuk MPS headed by Jennifer E. Buco and officials of Barangay Kan-Bulak.

After being initially received by the Army unit, the firearm was formally handed over to the police for proper documentation, forensic examination, and legal disposition.

Family Seeks Closure, Backs Peace Efforts

During the mediation and coordination process, the family of the deceased executed an Affidavit of Desistance, signaling their intent to pursue peaceful settlement and reconciliation. The family also expressed support for the ongoing efforts of security forces and local leaders to prevent further violence in the community.

Officials said the development reflects a growing willingness among residents to cooperate with authorities in resolving conflicts through lawful and non-violent means.

Military, Police Leaders Laud Community Cooperation

Lt. Col. Dante E. Mantes, Commanding Officer of the 101IB, described the voluntary surrender as a positive sign of trust between the community and security forces.

“This act demonstrates the people’s commitment to peace and their readiness to work with authorities for the safety of everyone,” Mantes said.

Meanwhile, Brig. Gen. Alaric Avelino P. Delos Santos, Commander of the 1102nd Infantry “Ganarul” Brigade, emphasized the importance of strong coordination among institutions.

“The close collaboration of the Army, police, and local government is vital in preventing the escalation of violence and maintaining stability,” he said.

Maj. Gen. Leonardo I. Peña, Commander of the 11th Infantry “Alakdan” Division and the Joint Task Force Orion, underscored that long-term security depends on shared responsibility.

“Lasting peace is achieved through mutual trust, cooperation, and active participation of both security forces and civilians,” Peña said.

Sustaining Peace in Sulu

The incident highlights the continuing partnership of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, the Philippine National Police, and local government units in addressing security concerns and promoting stability in Luuk and across Sulu.

Authorities reiterated their call for residents to report firearms and resolve disputes through legal channels, stressing that community cooperation remains key to preventing violence and ensuring lasting peace in the province.
