DATU HOFFER AMPATUAN, Maguindanao del Sur — The death toll among government forces has risen to two following a fierce encounter with the Dawlah Islamiya–Hassan Group (DI-HG) in Barangay Tuayan Mother, Datu Hoffer Ampatuan, as the military confirmed the death of another soldier who was initially reported missing during the firefight.

The 6th Infantry (Kampilan) Division and Joint Task Force Central on Wednesday confirmed the death of Corporal Junie C. Mangalay Jr., a member of the 90th Infantry (Bigkis-Lahi) Battalion and a resident of Tupi, South Cotabato. Mangalay was killed during sustained combat operations against DI-HG elements on Tuesday, January 27.
Military officials said Cpl. Mangalay became separated from his unit after he led an assault against the terrorist group during intense fighting in Sitio Bagurot, Barangay Tuayan Mother. His death came a day after the military confirmed the killing of Corporal Ryan Jun P. Bagual, a Scout Ranger also assigned to the 90IB, who sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head during the same encounter.
“With deep sorrow, we confirm the ultimate sacrifice of Corporal Junie C. Mangalay Jr., a true Filipino hero who gave his life in defense of peace and security,” said Major General Jose Vladimir R. Cagara, Commander of the 6th Infantry Division and Joint Task Force Central. “His courage, leadership, and selflessness in the face of grave danger embody the highest ideals of military service.”
Maj. Gen. Cagara stressed that Mangalay’s death will not be in vain, noting that his bravery serves as an inspiration to fellow soldiers and a reminder of the sacrifices made to protect civilians from terrorism and violence.
The encounter erupted shortly after 10:00 a.m. on January 27 when troops conducting security and combat operations clashed with armed members of the Dawlah Islamiya–Hassan Group, which authorities said was plotting violent activities in the area. The firefight escalated into a prolonged battle, prompting the military to launch combat-clearing and pursuit operations.
Earlier, Lt. Col. Ronald Suscano, spokesperson of the 6th Infantry Division, reported that several soldiers were wounded in the clash and are now receiving medical treatment. Military officials also said at least four DI-HG members were wounded, although verification is ongoing.
Civilians Displaced
The fighting displaced at least 83 families, forcing hundreds of residents to flee their homes amid fears of being caught in the crossfire. Evacuees sought temporary shelter at the municipal gymnasium of Datu Hoffer Ampatuan, local officials said. No civilian casualties have been reported, but assessments of property damage are ongoing.
Residents described scenes of panic as heavy gunfire echoed across the village, prompting families to escape with only essential belongings.
Operations Ongoing
Maj. Gen. Cagara assured the public that military operations remain ongoing to hold the perpetrators accountable and prevent further violence, in close coordination with local government units and community leaders.
“Together with the entire 6th Infantry Division and Joint Task Force Central, we grieve with the family of Corporal Mangalay,” he said. “Our resolve remains firm—peace will be defended, and the sacrifices of our fallen heroes will never be forgotten.”
The incident underscores the continuing security challenges in parts of Maguindanao del Sur, where remnants of extremist groups persist despite sustained military offensives.
