MALIDEGAO, Maguindanao del Sur — A decades-long conflict between the Abalos and Butuan families was formally resolved following a peaceful settlement brokered through the initiative of Malidegao Mayor Arnal M. Timan on December 24, 2025, in Barangay Balungis, local officials confirmed.
The agreement brought clarity and closure to a protracted dispute that had affected several communities, including the barangays of Balatican, Pikit, and Balungis. Through open dialogue and sustained negotiations, both families agreed to end hostilities, marking a significant step toward restoring stability and normalcy in the area.
Mayor Timan led the reconciliation efforts, working closely with local officials and respected leaders from neighboring towns to ensure a transparent and orderly process. Among those who assisted, witnessed, and took part in the settlement were Commander Datu Antik, Commander Ikot Dandua, Pagalungan Councilor Datu Salik Mamasabulod, Pikit Vice Mayor Datu Sumulong K. Sultan, Commander Zainudin “Kuat” Butuan, Malidegao Councilor Sukarno M. Mamasabulod, LNB President Jimmy Kusain of Gokotan, Pagalungan Vice Mayor Mohamidin Guiabel Mamasabulod, Pagalungan Councilor Jainodin Mamasabulod, Akmad Mamasabulod, Malidegao Councilor Mautin Pangandigan, Malidegao Vice Mayor Omar Travolta Mongkal, and Barangay Tinutulan Captain Karnain M. Sultan of Pikit.
Local officials said the successful settlement underscores the importance of decisive leadership and collective action in preventing violence and preserving peace. They credited Mayor Timan’s hands-on approach and the cooperation of community leaders for creating an environment where dialogue prevailed over conflict.
Authorities expressed hope that the resolution would serve as a model for addressing similar disputes, emphasizing that dialogue, understanding, and unity remain the most effective foundations for lasting peace and orderly coexistence in conflict-prone communities.
