IPIL, Zamboanga Sibugay — A Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) officer was shot dead in a daring and sudden ambush along the National Highway in Barangay Veterans Village, Ipil, on Thursday night, sending shockwaves through the local community and the uniformed services.



The victim was identified as Lt. Junior Grade Glennick S. Ytang, the Station Commander of the Philippine Coast Guard Ipil Sub-Station.
According to initial police reports, the officer had just come from a nearby coffee shop at around 8:15 p.m., carrying four cups of coffee and talking on his cellphone as he walked toward his pickup truck. Moments after he sat in the driver’s seat, successive gunshots rang out, hitting him multiple times.
Lt. Ytang was declared dead at the scene, slumped inside his vehicle.
Responding police units recovered seven spent shell casings from an undetermined firearm at the crime scene, indicating the intensity and precision of the attack. The gunman immediately fled after the shooting and remains at large.
Authorities have launched a full-scale manhunt and in-depth investigation to determine the motive behind the killing and to identify the suspect. Investigators are also reviewing CCTV footage from nearby establishments and are appealing to the public for any information that could help in the swift arrest of the assailant.
“This was a calculated and brazen attack,” a police official said, noting that the victim was unarmed and appeared to have been targeted.
The Philippine Coast Guard has yet to release an official statement, but the killing of a ranking officer has raised serious concerns over the safety of law enforcement personnel in the area.
Residents expressed alarm over the incident, describing it as a rare but deeply troubling act of violence in a usually busy stretch of the national highway.
The killing adds to growing concerns over gun-related attacks in parts of Mindanao, as authorities continue to intensify security operations and call for community cooperation to bring the perpetrators to justice.
