ZAMBOANGA CITY — Authorities seized suspected smuggled cigarettes worth more than P21 million during a pre-dawn maritime operation off the waters of Manalipa Island, Zamboanga City at around 4:00 a.m. today, dealing a significant blow to organized smuggling activities in the area.

The operation was carried out by the 2nd Mobile Force Company – SEABORNE under the leadership of PLT Col. Philmore D. Dumagat, following intelligence reports of an ongoing attempt to transport large volumes of contraband cigarettes through the city’s coastal waters.
Police operatives intercepted the suspect vessel and discovered a massive shipment of undocumented cigarette boxes believed to have been smuggled into the country, deliberately evading customs duties and regulatory controls. The contraband items were immediately secured and turned over for proper documentation and investigation.
Authorities said the operation underscores the Philippine National Police’s intensified campaign against smuggling, particularly in vulnerable coastal and island communities. Smuggling, they stressed, not only robs the government of much-needed revenue but also threatens public health through the circulation of unregulated and potentially harmful products.
“The success of this operation reflects our unwavering commitment to curb smuggling activities, protect our maritime borders, and safeguard the welfare of our communities,” the PNP said in a statement.
PLT Col. Dumagat was commended for his leadership, which authorities said was instrumental in the successful interception. Under his command, the 2nd Mobile Force Company SEABORNE has strengthened maritime patrols and intelligence-driven operations across Zamboanga City’s coastal areas.
An investigation is now underway to identify the individuals and syndicates behind the shipment. Authorities are preparing charges for violations of customs, revenue, and anti-smuggling laws against those responsible.
The PNP reiterated its call for public cooperation, urging residents to report suspicious maritime activities as authorities continue to tighten security against smuggling networks operating in the region.
