MALUSO, Basilan — A coordinated law enforcement operation by the Police Regional Office Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (PRO BAR) and the Basilan Maritime Police Station (MARPSA) led to the seizure of an estimated ₱388,575 worth of smuggled cigarettes on January 17, 2025, underscoring intensified efforts to curb illicit trade in the Bangsamoro region.

Authorities intercepted a motor pump boat at Barangay Shipyard Tabuk, Maluso, which was found loaded with assorted undocumented cigarettes. The vessel and contraband were abandoned by an unidentified individual, who fled the area upon detection, according to police reports.

The seized cigarettes and the impounded boat are now in the custody of MARPSA for proper documentation and case build-up. Officials said the contraband will be turned over to the Bureau of Customs for appropriate disposition in line with customs and excise regulations.

PBGEN Jaysen C. De Guzman, Regional Director of PRO BAR, commended the operating units for their swift and coordinated action, emphasizing that smuggling undermines legitimate businesses and deprives the government of much-needed revenues.

“We remain steadfast in our anti-smuggling campaign. Operations like this are crucial in protecting our economy and ensuring peace and security across the Bangsamoro,” De Guzman said.

Law enforcement authorities reiterated their commitment to sustained maritime patrols and inter-agency cooperation, noting that coastal areas in Basilan are often exploited by smugglers. Residents were also urged to report suspicious maritime activities, as officials vowed to intensify operations against all forms of criminality threatening economic stability in the region.
