DATU SALIBO, Maguindanao del Sur — In a significant step toward peace and stability in Central Mindanao, nine former members of armed violent extremist groups from the municipalities of Datu Salibo and Datu Saudi Ampatuan have voluntarily surrendered to the government in recent days, turning over their high-powered firearms as part of their return to the fold of the law.
The former extremists formally renounced armed struggle and pledged to rebuild their lives as peaceful, productive members of society. Their surrender was met with immediate support from the local government of Datu Salibo, which underscored its commitment to peacebuilding, reconciliation, and inclusive development.
Mayor Omar K. Ali of Datu Salibo personally led the distribution of rice and cash assistance to the surrenderers, together with Datu Saudi Ampatuan Administrator Bassir Utto Jr. The assistance forms part of the local government’s reintegration and livelihood support efforts aimed at helping former extremists transition back into civilian life and prevent their return to violence.
Local officials emphasized that the program is designed not only to address immediate needs but also to encourage long-term reintegration through sustained government support and community acceptance. Authorities hailed the surrender as a testament to the effectiveness of localized peace initiatives and the growing trust between communities and the government.
The LGU of Datu Salibo reaffirmed its support for former violent extremist groups who choose peace, stressing that development, dialogue, and compassion remain key pillars in ending armed conflict and securing lasting peace in Maguindanao del Sur.
