STA. CLARA, LAMITAN CITY — After nearly five months of heightened tension and fear in parts of Basilan, the long-running rido between the families of Abdurajan Najalan and Selma Asmilin of Barangay Taberlongan, Maluso, has finally come to an end following a formal settlement mediated by local authorities and the Philippine Army on November 17, 2025.

The mediation, held at the Ra’ayat Hall of the Basilan Government Center, brought together key provincial officials, military leaders, police officers, and traditional and religious stakeholders in a united call for peace. The settlement was spearheaded by the 32nd Infantry (Daredevil) Battalion of the 11th Infantry (Alakdan) Division under the leadership of LTC Gerwin T. Maghuyop, INF (GSC) PA.

The rido, which began in June 2025, had deeply affected the daily lives of both families and nearby communities. Residents, particularly children and spouses of both clans, were gripped with fear—avoiding markets, public areas, and even routine activities due to the possibility of violent encounters.

Basilan Governor Mujiv S. Hataman presided over the settlement, highlighting the importance of reconciliation as a foundation for peace and progress in the province. “The peaceful resolution of conflicts is essential to building a united and secure Basilan,” he stressed, commending the parties for choosing dialogue over continued discord.

Representing the security sector, officers of the 32nd Infantry Battalion—including 1LT Jose Miguel Abellanosa, Commander of Charlie Company—affirmed the Army’s commitment to supporting local conflict-resolution mechanisms. Their presence underscored the military’s role in safeguarding communities and facilitating peaceful solutions to longstanding disputes.

Also in attendance were key leaders and peace partners, including 101st Infantry Brigade Commander BGEN Frederick M. Sales, Basilan Police Provincial Director PCOL Cerrazid A. Umabong, 45IB Commanding Officer LTC Franco F. Baylon, MILF Deputy Commander Rajan Abduhraman, Basilan Ulama Supreme Council Chair Dr. Aboulkhair S. Tarason, and Provincial Government Chief Negotiator Al-Rasheed M. Sakallahul, along with community elders and religious leaders.

BGEN Sales lauded both families for choosing peace, saying, “Thanks to the two parties who gave themselves to the cause of peaceful resolution.” Governor Hataman also extended his gratitude to the Philippine Army and the Provincial Peace Committee for their steadfast work in promoting stability across Basilan.

The 32nd Infantry (Daredevil) Battalion reiterated its commitment to sustaining peace advocacy, strengthening partnerships, and preventing local conflicts to ensure that every Basileño can live without fear.

“Your Security is Our Commitment — For a Peaceful and Progressive Basilan.”
