Bagong Calarian, Zamboanga City — In a tense, high-stakes crackdown that unfolded across the Sulu Sea, the Western Mindanao Naval Command (WMNC) struck a major blow against smuggling networks, intercepting ₱174.27 million worth of illicit foreign-brand cigarettes during sustained maritime operations from November 13 to 17, 2025.

Operating in the waters of Tapul, Banguingui, Lugus, and Jolo, Navy patrol units closed in on five motorized watercraft attempting to breach maritime borders under the cover of darkness. The interceptions came after hours of relentless pursuit and precision maneuvering—culminating in the arrest of 35 crew members and the seizure of more than 2,874 master cases of smuggled cigarettes.

The volume of contraband per vessel was staggering:

  • M/B RADZBOY – 500 master cases (₱29,000,000)
  • M/B ARRIANE – 300 master cases (₱17,340,000)
  • M/L DAKILA – 1,095 master cases & 47 reams (₱64,297,362)
  • M/B MURAMURAHAN – 398 master cases & 47 reams (₱37,391,562)
  • F/B PRINCESS WANIA – 401 master cases (₱23,327,300)
  • M/B YATHRIB – 180 master cases & 59 reams (₱9,826,314)

All interdicted vessels were escorted under heightened security to Naval Station Romulo Espaldon in Zamboanga City for inventory and turnover to the Bureau of Customs–Port of Zamboanga.

The operation’s scale and the speed with which it was executed highlight the growing sophistication of smuggling syndicates, as well as the Navy’s uncompromising resolve to dismantle their operations. Patrolling through rough waters and navigating potential hostile encounters, WMNC personnel maintained unbroken pressure, preventing the illicit cargo from slipping into local markets.

WMNC’s latest success sends a resounding message: the Philippine Navy remains steadfast, vigilant, and unyielding in defending the nation’s maritime borders from smuggling and other illicit activities.
