TALAYAN, MAGUINDANAO DEL SUR — A long-standing political rift between two influential cousins—Ampatuan Mayor Datu Rasul Mabang Sangki and 118th Battalion Commander Hamsa Sangki Kindo, also known as Commander Toabak—was finally settled through a peace initiative led by the 601st Infantry Brigade under Brigadier General Edgar Catu and Maguindanao del Sur Governor Datu Ali Midtimbang.
The reconciliation ceremony was held at the Governor’s sub-office in Talayan, Maguindanao del Sur, and was attended by provincial and local government officials, members of the Philippine National Police, the military, and representatives from various sectors. Also present was Maguindanao del Sur League of Municipalities President Mayor Nathaniel Midtimbang, who witnessed the formal signing of the peace agreement.
The settlement, which marked the end of a political conflict that had caused tension between the two, was sealed after a dialogue facilitated by the provincial government and the 601st Infantry Brigade. Both parties signed a covenant to strengthen mutual understanding and cooperation moving forward.
Governor Ali Midtimbang, who spearheaded the reconciliation, commended both sides for their willingness to set aside differences for the sake of lasting peace and unity in Maguindanao del Sur.
“This is a strong message that peace is achievable when leaders choose dialogue over division,” said Governor Midtimbang.
General Catu also lauded the efforts of both leaders and emphasized the military’s continued support for local peace initiatives that prevent the recurrence of rido (clan feuds) in the province.
The settlement between Mayor Sangki and Commander Toabak is seen as a crucial step in maintaining stability in the region, aligning with ongoing peacebuilding efforts between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) under the Bangsamoro peace process.
