M’LANG, COTABATO — A member of the LGBTQIA+ community was shot dead late Thursday night, October 23, 2025, in what authorities are investigating as a possible case of personal grudge or targeted attack.
The victim was identified as Bambi Cortez Ocumen, a beautician and resident of Purok 6, Barangay Dugong, M’lang, Cotabato.
Initial police reports revealed that Ocumen was riding a motorcycle when an unidentified assailant suddenly opened fire, hitting the victim multiple times. Ocumen sustained five gunshot wounds to the body and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead while being treated by attending doctors.
The suspect quickly fled the scene after the shooting, leaving behind shocked residents in the quiet barangay.
Police from the M’lang Municipal Police Station have launched a thorough investigation to determine the motive behind the killing and identify the gunman. Authorities are not discounting the possibility of personal conflict as a motive but are also exploring other angles, including whether the attack may have been related to the victim’s gender identity.
Community members and friends of Ocumen have expressed grief and outrage over the incident, calling for justice and greater protection for members of the LGBTQIA+ community who continue to face harassment and violence.
As of press time, investigators are gathering evidence and eyewitness accounts to track down the perpetrator.
