Suspect surrenders after brutal attack witnessed by victim’s children
OPOL, MISAMIS ORIENTAL — A 28-year-old housewife was brutally killed after being stabbed 22 times by her brother-in-law early morning on Sunday, October 12, in Zone 5, Barangay Tingalan, Opol, Misamis Oriental.
The victim, identified as Mary Jane Jabagat, sustained multiple stab wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect, Jiourne Bahain, a palm oil harvester and the brother of Jabagat’s live-in partner, immediately surrendered to the barangay captain after the gruesome attack.
According to the initial police investigation, the crime occurred around 5:30 a.m. following a heated argument between the two. Bahain allegedly intervened in a quarrel between Jabagat and his brother, claiming he was merely trying to mediate. However, the argument escalated, leading to Bahain losing control and repeatedly stabbing the victim with a 17-inch bolo, even in front of her children.
Authorities from the Opol Municipal Police Station confirmed that Bahain has been placed under their custody while further investigation and legal procedures are underway.
Jabagat’s family is currently appealing for financial assistance to help with funeral expenses. Her body lies in state at Zone 3, Barangay Tingalan.
A heartbroken message from her brother circulated on social media, expressing deep grief over her tragic death:
“I know your goodness, and I’ve seen your flaws, but you never deserved this. My heart is heavy, my soul shattered. You may be gone, but you will forever stay in my heart. Rest in peace, my Ate.”
Police are preparing to file appropriate charges against the suspect as the community mourns the loss of another life to domestic violence.
