Del Carmen, Siargao Island — Once burdened by the reputation of being the “Illegal Mangrove Capital,” the Municipality of Del Carmen in Siargao has rewritten its story, emerging as a global model for environmental conservation and sustainable tourism.
The town’s inspiring transformation was honored on September 30, 2025, when it earned a coveted place in the 2025 Top 100 Green Destination Stories, announced during the Green Destinations event in Montpellier, France.
Guided by the vision and leadership of Mayor Alfredo M. Coro II, Del Carmen has become a beacon of resilience, community action, and innovative governance. Central to its success is the restoration and protection of its vast mangrove forests—once threatened by widespread illegal cutting—that are now safeguarded as vital ecosystems for biodiversity and climate resilience.
The municipality’s conservation achievements have earned it international prestige, including its recent designation as a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention. This recognition highlights Del Carmen’s efforts to not only preserve natural resources but also empower its local communities through eco-tourism initiatives that create jobs, support livelihoods, and instill a culture of environmental stewardship.
“Del Carmen’s success story shows what is possible when local governments and communities work together for the environment,” said DENR Caraga OIC and Regional Executive Director Maritess M. Ocampo, who extended her warmest congratulations to the municipality. “The DENR remains committed to supporting local governments and communities in replicating this model across the country to advance the Philippines’ environmental agenda on the global stage.”
The Green Destinations Top 100 Stories competition, launched in 2014, annually recognizes destinations worldwide that exemplify sustainable tourism practices. Entries are rigorously evaluated for effectiveness, innovation, and transferability, making Del Carmen’s win not only a local triumph but also a story that inspires global audiences.
For residents of Del Carmen, the recognition is more than just an award—it is validation of years of collective effort to protect their home and future generations. The mangrove forests that once symbolized neglect and exploitation now stand as living proof of renewal and resilience.
With this latest accolade, Del Carmen’s story demonstrates that with strong leadership, people’s participation, and a steadfast commitment to sustainability, communities can rise above their past and carve out a greener, brighter future.
