LIGAWASAN, BARMM — The military and local government have intervened to halt a fierce firefight between two warring clans in Barangay Barongis, Ligawasan, Special Geographic Area (SGA) of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), underscoring the region’s fragile peace amid the continued proliferation of illegal firearms and unresolved family feuds or rido.

The 40th Infantry Battalion (40IB) of the Philippine Army under the 6th Infantry Division, along with officials of the Ligawasan municipal government led by Mayor Esmael “Boy Hashim” Mama and Vice Mayor Bai Jenaida Abas, entered the conflict zone early Wednesday to pacify the fighting groups from the Sampulna and Adam families.

According to reports from DXMY and the PNP-BARMM, the gun battle erupted late Tuesday night and lasted until early Wednesday morning, causing panic among residents who fled their homes for safety. The exchange of gunfire continued for about 30 minutes before subsiding when soldiers and local officials arrived.

Initial reports indicate that one person from the Sampulna clan was killed, while authorities are still verifying if there were casualties from the Adam side. The combatants reportedly fled upon seeing government troops approaching the area.

PNP-BARMM Spokesperson Lt. Col. Jopy Ventura said the motive behind the incident was rido — a long-standing clan feud that remains a recurring cause of violence in parts of BARMM.

The military has deployed additional troops to prevent further clashes and to maintain peace and order. The local government, meanwhile, has called for dialogue between the two families to end the bloodshed and restore stability in the community.

Incidents like this highlight how easily peace in Mindanao can be disrupted, especially with the continued spread of unlicensed firearms and deep-seated clan rivalries. Authorities reiterate the need for stronger disarmament and reconciliation efforts to secure lasting peace in the Bangsamoro region.
