Indanan, Sulu – September 5, 2025

A long-standing rift between two prominent families in Indanan, Sulu, finally came to an end after the local government successfully brokered a peace settlement on September 5, 2025. The agreement, reached at the municipal office in Barangay Pasil, involved the families of Al-Mudar Bani and Talib M. Jalmani of Barangay Bangalan, who had been at odds due to a tribal conflict.

The settlement, facilitated by Mayor Albakil “Thong” D. Jikiri, was the culmination of weeks of community dialogue and cooperation among local authorities, security forces, and respected elders. The Indanan Municipal Police Station and the Bravo Company of the 100th Infantry Battalion, 11th Infantry Division, also lent support to ensure that the peace talks were conducted in a safe and constructive environment.

Barangay Bangalan Chairwoman Fatima Quittiya H. Hayudini played a central role in guiding the process, drawing on traditional practices of conflict mediation to encourage both sides to embrace reconciliation. The involvement of tribal elders and community leaders provided the settlement with moral weight, strengthening its legitimacy and fostering trust among the families.

The agreement marks not only the end of hostilities but also the beginning of a renewed commitment to unity in the community. For many residents, the peaceful resolution serves as a reminder of the power of dialogue and the importance of collective action in sustaining stability.

“This is more than just the resolution of a family dispute,” a local elder noted. “It is a victory for peace in our community.”

Observers believe the settlement could serve as a model for other communities in Sulu and the broader Bangsamoro region, where localized conflicts have often escalated into larger disputes. The Indanan LGU’s proactive approach demonstrates how local governance, when coupled with traditional practices, can effectively address disputes that once seemed insurmountable.

As Indanan moves forward, the settlement between the Bani and Jalmani families stands as a testament to the resilience of the community and the shared commitment to peace.
