Valencia City, Bukidnon — Soldiers of the 89th Infantry (MAKATAO) Battalion, Philippine Army, swiftly responded to massive flooding that swept across several barangays in Valencia City, evacuating thousands of residents and underscoring the critical role of the military in disaster response.

In coordination with the Valencia City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC) and local government units, the 89IB rescued and evacuated at least 2,363 families from the most affected communities, including Panlibatuhan River Poblacion, Bagontaas, Barobo, Colonia, Lumbo, Mailag, Poblacion, Sugod, and Tugaya.
Authorities confirmed five fatalities from the flooding, while search and retrieval operations continue for three missing individuals. To bolster the rescue efforts, additional personnel from the Emergency Response Company of the 10th Infantry Division (10ID) were dispatched to augment manpower and resources.
Beyond Valencia City, 89IB troops also extended humanitarian assistance in Maramag, Bukidnon, where heavy flooding displaced families and damaged homes. Soldiers facilitated evacuation, delivered relief goods, and provided manpower in partnership with local disaster response teams.
Lieutenant Colonel Antonio G. Bulao I, Commander of the 89IB, stressed that the Army’s humanitarian mission goes hand in hand with its defense role.
“The Army’s HADRO/DRRO units play an indispensable role not only in combat but also in saving lives during disasters. Our troops are trained and ready to respond swiftly to natural calamities, and we work hand-in-hand with local disaster councils to protect our fellow Filipinos,” Bulao said.
The Philippine Army affirmed its commitment to prioritize humanitarian service, providing logistics, manpower, and security support to flood-stricken communities. The 89IB, reinforced by 10ID’s Emergency Response Company, remains on high alert for continued relief, recovery, and rehabilitation operations.
