The waters of Mabini, Davao de Oro, are glistening a little brighter this year as the Mabini Protected Landscape and Seascape (MPLS) earns a coveted spot among the six official finalists in the Para el MAR 2025 Awards—the country’s highest recognition for excellence in managing Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).

The Para el MAR Awards, organized by the Marine Protected Areas Support Network (MSN) and backed by a coalition of conservation partners, is not just another accolade. It honors exceptional achievements in marine biodiversity protection, community engagement, and sustainable coastal management. For MPLS, this recognition is a testament to decades of collective hard work, resilience, and a deep love for the sea.
The ‘Jewel of Davao Gulf’
Nestled in the coastal municipality of Mabini, MPLS is often called the “Jewel of Davao Gulf” for a reason. Officially declared a protected area under Republic Act 7586 and reinforced by the Expanded NIPAS Act of 2018, it safeguards one of Region XI’s most important Key Biodiversity Areas.
Spanning 7,292.62 hectares, MPLS is a vibrant tapestry of life. Its mangrove forests stand as natural shields against storms. Seagrass beds sway gently under the currents, nurturing fish and marine creatures. Coral reefs burst with color, sheltering a rich diversity of reef fish, giant clams, and sea turtles. Even migratory birds find refuge here. These ecosystems are not just natural wonders—they are lifelines, supporting the fisheries that feed local families and the ecotourism activities that boost the town’s economy.
A Community-Driven Success
Behind MPLS’s success is a strong spirit of collaboration. The Protected Area Management Board (PAMB), local government units, people’s organizations, indigenous communities, and civil society have worked hand in hand to keep its waters thriving. Science-based ecological monitoring, habitat restoration projects, strict law enforcement, and responsible tourism initiatives have turned the protected area into a model of integrated coastal resource management.
For local fisherfolk and community members, the finalist recognition is more than a plaque or certificate—it is proof that their sacrifices and stewardship have real, visible impact.
A Celebration of Stewardship
The Para el MAR 2025 Awards will culminate in a national ceremony honoring winners in categories such as Best Locally Managed MPA, Best Mangrove Award, Outstanding Network, and Outstanding NIPAS MPA. Whether or not MPLS takes home the top prize, its place among the finalists already cements its status as one of the country’s most effective and inspiring marine sanctuaries.
For the people of Mabini, the sea is more than a horizon—it is heritage, sustenance, and hope. And in the shimmering waters of the Davao Gulf, the Jewel of Mabini continues to shine, reminding the nation that when communities and nature work together, both can flourish.
