MATANAO, DAVAO DEL SUR — A young policewoman tragically lost her life in an accidental firearm discharge inside the female quarters of the Matanao Municipal Police Station in Barangay Poblacion on the evening of July 11, 2025.

The victim was identified as Patrolwoman Kay Remando Dumasig, 28 years old, a dedicated member of the Matanao MPS.

According to initial investigations, the incident happened around 6:50 p.m. while Patrolwoman Dumasig was preparing her issued service firearm—a 9mm Girsan pistol (Serial No. T6368-22CK03370)—in anticipation of a planned buy-bust operation. While loading the firearm, it accidentally slipped from her hands. She attempted to catch it, but her hand inadvertently triggered the weapon, causing it to discharge and strike her fatally in the head.

She was immediately rushed to MCDC Hospital in Digos City, where she was declared dead on arrival despite emergency medical efforts.

The Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) were requested to conduct a thorough investigation, and the recovered firearm is now in official custody as part of the ongoing inquiry.

The Davao del Sur Police Provincial Office (DSPPO) expressed profound grief over the incident and described Dumasig as a committed and passionate police officer.

“The entire DSPPO family is grieving over the tragic loss of one of our own. Patrolwoman Dumasig served with dedication and passion. Her passing is a heartbreaking reminder of the risks our personnel face even during preparation,” said Police Colonel Leo T. Ajero, DSPPO Provincial Director. “We extend our heartfelt sympathies and prayers to her family and loved ones in this very difficult time.”

PCol. Ajero also assured that the DSPPO will continue to provide full support and assistance to Dumasig’s family and ensure that proper protocols and procedures are strictly followed during the investigation.

“Let us all honor her service and remember her with the highest respect she truly deserves,” he added.

The accidental loss of Patrolwoman Dumasig has deeply shaken the local police community and serves as a solemn reminder of the dangers law enforcers face not only in the field but even in preparation for duty.
