Butuan City, July 12, 2025 — A couple who were active members of the New People’s Army (NPA) have voluntarily surrendered to government forces in Sitio Mahayahay, Barangay Anticala, Butuan City.

The surrender took place on the morning of July 12 and was facilitated by the joint efforts of the 48th Infantry Battalion, 29th Infantry Battalion, other Philippine Army units under the operational control of the 901st Infantry Brigade, and the Philippine National Police (PNP) CARAGA.

The former rebels were identified as alias “Julia/Etol,” a vice commander and squad leader, and alias “Marriane,” a political guide. Along with their surrender, alias Julia/Etol turned over an M16A1 rifle.

According to the military, the couple’s surrender is a clear indication of the weakening influence of the NPA in the region and supports the government’s continued call for insurgents to return to the fold of the law.

“There are only two paths for NPA members,” the 48th Infantry Battalion stated. “Either face a senseless death in the mountains or choose the road back to a peaceful life with their families.”

The battalion further stressed that terrorist and bandit activities have no place in Butuan City and the neighboring provinces of Agusan del Norte and Agusan del Sur.

Authorities assured that the couple will be assisted through the government’s reintegration program to help them start anew and live peaceful, productive lives.
