CAMP SIONGCO, Awang, DOS, Maguindanao del Norte — Recognizing the vital role of the media in disaster preparedness and response, the 6th Infantry (Kampilan) Division and the Office of Civil Defense – Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (OCD-BARMM) conducted a one-day Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Orientation for media personnel on July 2, 2025.

Held at the Officer’s Club House inside the 6ID headquarters, the orientation brought together members of the Kampilan Defense Press Corps—composed of journalists from print, broadcast, and online platforms—to strengthen partnerships between disaster response agencies and the media.

Major General Donald M. Gumiran, Commander of the 6ID and Joint Task Force Central (JTFC), underscored the increasing relevance of the media in disaster situations amid the worsening impacts of climate change.

“The training comes at a time when the role of media is more critical than ever. As we face increasing threats from natural calamities and the unpredictable effects of climate change, our people rely on timely, accurate, and reliable information,” Maj. Gen. Gumiran said during his closing message.

OCD-BARMM Regional Director Retired Colonel Joel Q. Mamon echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the media’s key role in early warning, public education, and real-time reporting.

“The media is a lifeline in disaster scenarios. This activity enhances the awareness of media practitioners on disaster response and preparedness, making them essential partners in our collective efforts,” Mamon said.

The orientation also highlighted the role of PAGASA in monitoring and forecasting hydrometeorological hazards, further enriching the knowledge of participants on disaster trends and early warning systems.

As part of the observance of National Disaster Resilience Month, OCD-BARMM held its kick-off activity on July 3 with a Fun Walk from Gate 1 of Camp Siongco to the 6ID gymnasium, followed by a zumba session and a short program. The event gathered personnel from OCD-BARMM, 6ID soldiers, and various stakeholders.

This year’s theme, “Kumikilos—Para sa Kahandaan, Kaligtasan at Katatagan,” highlights the importance of proactive actions toward preparedness, safety, and resilience in the face of disasters.
