Push for Stronger Disaster Preparedness and Response Underway

Marawi City, Lanao del Sur — July 24, 2025 | In a significant step toward boosting local disaster preparedness and response, the Provincial Emergency Operations Center (EOC) of Lanao del Sur kicked off its EOC Enhancement Series today with a seminar on Integrated System Operations. The activity is spearheaded by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) in partnership with its system service provider.

Held on July 24, the seminar aimed to orient and capacitate EOC personnel on the operation and full utilization of newly installed digital and communications systems at the center. The training forms part of a series of enhancement programs designed to streamline emergency coordination, improve situational awareness, and strengthen disaster response efforts across the province.

“This is more than just a technical orientation. It’s about transforming our systems and skills to be more proactive, responsive, and effective in times of crisis,” said a representative from the PDRRMO.

Lanao del Sur, like many provinces in Mindanao, faces recurring threats from natural disasters such as floods, landslides, and earthquakes, as well as conflict-induced emergencies. The upgrade of its Emergency Operations Center—alongside the capability-building activities for its personnel—is a crucial move in ensuring timely and coordinated responses.

Experts say that regular system updates and integrated training significantly reduce response time and help avoid the bottlenecks often experienced during disaster operations. These upgrades include real-time data dashboards, communication tools, incident tracking software, and interoperable networks with local government units and response agencies.

“With climate change accelerating the intensity and frequency of natural hazards, our local government units must keep up through updated technology and well-trained personnel,” the service provider emphasized during the seminar.

The EOC Enhancement Series will continue with more focused training sessions in the coming weeks, targeting specific areas such as logistics tracking, emergency communications, rapid damage assessment, and data-driven decision-making.

Through this effort, the provincial government reiterates its commitment to building a disaster-resilient Lanao del Sur—one that is equipped not only with tools but also with the knowledge to protect lives and livelihoods.
