Tagum City, Davao del Norte — In a heartwarming celebration of the elderly’s invaluable role in society, the City Government of Tagum kicked off the second year of its flagship senior citizen tour program, “Lakbay Tagumenyo El Anciano,” by giving the senior residents of Barangay Mankilam a relaxing and joy-filled field trip to the scenic Sea Eagle Beach Resort in Mabini, Davao de Oro on July 29.

Far from the hustle of city life, laughter and stories filled the air as grandmothers and grandfathers dipped their feet in the sea, strolled along the beach, and bonded with fellow seniors — all expenses paid.

The program, which translates to “The Tagumenyo Elderly Travel,” is a brainchild of Mayor Rey T. Uy, who envisions a community that genuinely honors and includes its elderly in programs that promote wellness, happiness, and active aging. Inspired by the idea that the senior sector deserves moments of leisure after years of contribution to family and community, the mayor said this initiative is a way to give back.

“We often celebrate our youth and our workforce, but let’s not forget that our seniors laid the groundwork. They’ve nurtured homes, built lives, and helped shape Tagum into the city it is today,” Mayor Uy shared in an earlier statement. “This is our way of recognizing them — not just with services, but with experiences.”

The trip to Sea Eagle Beach Resort marked the first leg of this year’s round of tours, with more barangays lined up for their turn. The day was filled with fun games, music, shared meals, and gentle moments by the sea — simple joys that meant the world to many of the participants.

For 72-year-old Nanay Erlinda, it was her first time seeing the beach in years. “Murag batan-on ko balik,” she chuckled. “Salamat kaayo sa Tagum. Dili mi kalimot ani.”

Since its launch in 2023, Lakbay Tagumenyo El Anciano has already brought hundreds of senior citizens to nearby tourist destinations, offering not just leisure but also moments of healing and connection.

With each bus trip, Tagum proves that true progress is not only measured in infrastructure and investments, but also in how a city treats its most seasoned citizens.

Here in Tagum, things are truly different. 💚❤️
