Matalam, Cotabato — May 14, 2025 — A public school teacher and his pregnant wife were shot dead in what authorities suspect may be a robbery or targeted attack in Barangay Poblacion, Matalam, Cotabato on Tuesday evening.
The victims were identified as Eliser “Esing” Sugaste, a visual arts teacher and Special Program in the Arts (SPA) Coordinator at Matalam National High School, and his wife, Lalaine Tejada Valdez Sugaste, who was reportedly several months pregnant. The couple also ran a small computer shop in the area, where the fatal shooting took place.
Initial police reports said that the suspects took off with the couple’s red Honda CRF motorcycle after the shooting. Despite Eliser reportedly complying with the suspects’ demand by handing over the keys, both he and his wife were shot multiple times. They were rushed to a nearby hospital but were declared dead on arrival.
Investigators are currently looking into whether the motive was purely carnapping, robbery, or if there were other angles behind the killing. A hot pursuit operation has been launched by the Philippine National Police (PNP) to identify and apprehend the suspects.
In a statement, the Supreme Student Government of Matalam National High School expressed deep sorrow and outrage over the incident.
“We are deeply saddened and outraged by the brutal and senseless killing of Sir Eliser Sugaste, our visual arts teacher and SPA Coordinator, and his beloved wife, Mrs. Lalaine Sugaste. Their tragic deaths have left a deep void in the hearts of their family, friends, students, and the entire community,” the statement read.
“As we mourn, we also call and demand for justice. This horrific act must not be met with silence or inaction. We call on the authorities to conduct a swift, thorough, and transparent investigation to ensure that those responsible are held fully accountable.”
The killings have sent shockwaves through the community, with many demanding justice and tighter security for civilians, especially educators and small business owners.
The investigation is ongoing.
