On May 17, 2025, Cagayan de Oro City solemnly commemorated the 80th anniversary of its liberation from Japanese occupation during World War II. This significant milestone pays tribute to the courage and patriotism of local guerrilla fighters and the United States Forces in the Philippines (USFIP) who fought valiantly to reclaim freedom for the city, then known as Cagayan de Misamis.

A City’s Struggle and Triumph

The liberation of Cagayan de Misamis was a pivotal event in the broader campaign to free the Philippines from Japanese control. From May 9 to 12, 1945, Filipino guerrillas from the 109th and 120th Infantry Regiments of the USFIP launched a coordinated offensive against Japanese forces entrenched in the city. The operation began with an attack on Japanese positions in Iponan, leading to the capture of the Patag Airstrip (now Camp Evangelista), and culminated in the occupation of key strategic points, including the damaged Cagayan Bridge (Ysalina Bridge).

By May 12, 1945, after intense fighting and strategic maneuvers, the guerrilla forces successfully expelled the Japanese occupiers, marking the city’s liberation. This victory was part of the larger Battle of Mindanao, a crucial campaign in the Pacific theater of World War II.

Honoring the Heroes

In a ceremony held at the City Museum, city officials, veterans, and residents gathered to honor the sacrifices of those who fought for Cagayan de Oro’s freedom. City Administrator Roy Hilario Raagas, speaking on behalf of Mayor Rolando ‘Klarex’ Uy, emphasized the importance of remembering the bravery of the Kagay-anon veterans who stood against the Imperial Japanese Army. The event also featured the unveiling of the “CDO Liberated Exhibit,” curated by Nicolas Aca Jr., showcasing artifacts and narratives from the liberation period.

Preserving the Legacy

Efforts to commemorate this historic event have been ongoing. In recent years, exhibits and lecture series have been organized to educate the public about the city’s wartime history and the heroism of its people. These initiatives aim to ensure that the legacy of the liberation and the sacrifices made are not forgotten by future generations.

As Cagayan de Oro reflects on its past, the 80th Liberation Day serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience and courage that define the city’s history. It is a day to honor the heroes who fought for freedom and to inspire continued appreciation for the peace and liberty enjoyed today.
