The Provincial Government of Basilan continues to stand firmly with its farmers and fisherfolk, recognizing their unwavering resilience and dedication in ensuring food production and sustainability in the province despite natural and man-made challenges.
In response to the growing threats to agriculture, the government has implemented several key interventions. Among them is the allocation of substantial resources to combat the Cocolisap infestation. Through the ongoing program “Binhi mo, Bilhin ko, Itanim mo,” efforts to rehabilitate affected coconut farms are underway, aiming to restore productivity in these areas.
To enhance the rubber industry, the province has focused on improving the quality of coagulated rubber. This has led to the establishment of two rubber processing plants and the distribution of more than 10,000 coagulating bins to local farmers. In addition, to address food shortages such as those experienced during the Zamboanga siege, programs like free land preparation, input distribution, and technical support have been rolled out to strengthen food security.
Support for the fisheries sector has also been a priority. The province has intensified efforts to stop the illegal entry of purse seiners, helping local fishermen access richer fishing grounds. Motorized boats have also been distributed to improve fishing efficiency and increase catch.
Despite the recent outbreak of Pestalotiopsis Leaf Fall Disease, which has negatively impacted crop production, the government has responded swiftly with containment and mitigation efforts to reduce the spread and effect of the disease.
Under the dynamic leadership of Governor Hon. Jim S. Hataman Salliman, these programs are just a few of the many initiatives being implemented to uplift the agricultural sector. The Provincial Government, through the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPAg), assures continuous improvement and availability of services to all farmers and fisherfolk.
Further promoting food sufficiency and healthy living, OPAg has also partnered with local rice farmers to supply freshly harvested brown rice. One of the proud producers is Mr. Francisco Arroyo from Tairan, Lantawan Municipality, who is committed to serving his fellow Basileños with high-quality brown rice.
The Provincial Government encourages all to take part in supporting local agriculture. “Hats off to all our food producers,” OPAg expressed. “Your PGB-OPAg will continue to work for your welfare and success.”
