Public urged to stay vigilant as health authorities monitor suspected cases

South Cotabato — Health authorities in South Cotabato have confirmed ten (10) cases of monkeypox, also known as mpox, as of May 10, according to the Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO). The confirmation was made by Provincial Health Officer Dr. Conrado M. Braña Jr. during a press conference held Friday morning.

The confirmed cases are from the following municipalities and city:

  • Banga – 1 case
  • Koronadal City – 1 case
  • Tantangan – 1 case
  • T’boli – 4 cases
  • Surallah – 2 cases
  • Lake Sebu – 1 case

In addition to the ten confirmed cases, the IPHO is closely monitoring nine (9) suspected cases across the province.

Dr. Braña emphasized that the individuals infected with mpox are under strict medical monitoring to prevent further transmission. “We have already identified all the close contacts of the confirmed cases, and they are also being closely observed,” he said.

The health official assured the public that containment measures are in place, including isolation protocols and contact tracing. He urged residents to remain calm but vigilant, and to promptly report any symptoms related to mpox, such as fever, rash, swollen lymph nodes, and muscle aches.

Mpox is a rare viral disease that can spread through close contact with an infected person, contaminated objects, or respiratory droplets. While the illness is often self-limiting, it can cause complications, especially in individuals with weakened immune systems.

The IPHO continues to coordinate with local government units and health facilities to manage the situation and prevent further spread.

Residents are advised to practice proper hygiene, avoid close contact with individuals showing symptoms, and seek medical attention when necessary. Public awareness campaigns and health advisories are also being intensified across affected communities.

The provincial government is expected to issue additional updates as more information becomes available.
