SUMISIP, BASILAN — With vibrant colors, rhythmic dances, and a deep sense of pride, the Municipality of Sumisip welcomed its 51st Founding Anniversary and the much-anticipated Kalasig-lasigan Festival 2025 on April 8, marking more than half a century of transformation, resilience, and cultural unity.
Held at the Sumisip Gymnasium in Barangay Buli-Buli, this year’s celebration carries the powerful theme, “Strengthening Traditions and Sustaining Growth for a Prosperous Sumisip,” highlighting the community’s unwavering commitment to peace, development, and cultural preservation.
The opening ceremony was graced by Brigadier General Alvin V. Luzon PA, Commander of the 101st Infantry (Three Red Arrows) Brigade, who served as Guest of Honor and Keynote Speaker. In his stirring message, Brig. Gen. Luzon lauded the people of Sumisip for their enduring spirit and unity—qualities that have steered the town away from its conflict-ridden past toward a promising and peaceful future.
“Today marks another significant milestone—a time to reflect, celebrate, and honor the strength of the people of Sumisip,” he said. “Unity is the invisible force that turned Sumisip from conflict toward peace and stability. This is your victory. The triumph of the people, who chose peace, preserved tradition, and worked together for a better future.”
Also joining the celebration were Vice Governor Yusop Alano and Board Member Atty. Jay Hataman, who echoed messages of support and admiration for the town’s progress. They commended both the local leaders and the broader community for keeping the flame of tradition alive while championing inclusive and sustainable development.
Prominent provincial and municipal figures also showed their support, including Board Member Mico Asarul, ABC President and Barangay Chairperson Sarib Hataman, Deputy Brigade Commander Colonel Frederick Sales, Lt. Col. Edmund Lanzar of the 32nd Infantry Battalion, Lt. Col. Adolf Ian Garceron of the 4th Special Forces Battalion, Col. Umabong of the Basilan Provincial Police Office, and other security forces and uniformed personnel—further underscoring the spirit of cooperation and solidarity that now defines Sumisip.
At the heart of the celebration is the Kalasig-lasigan Festival, a colorful tribute to the rich Yakan culture and the intertwined legacy of the land and sea. Far more than a festive spectacle, the festival serves as a living narrative of the people’s heritage, identity, and aspirations. It is a cultural expression of pride, strength, and the collective hope for a better, brighter Sumisip.
The week-long celebration, backed by Mayor Jul-Adnan Hataman, Vice Mayor Gulam “Boy” Hataman, and the Sangguniang Bayan, is set to feature cultural performances, community gatherings, and events that honor both the town’s storied past and its progressive present.
As Sumisip steps confidently into the future, the 51st Founding Anniversary stands not just as a celebration of years gone by—but as a reminder of what can be achieved when a community stands together, honors its roots, and works hand-in-hand for a shared vision of peace and prosperity.
