Maguindanao del Sur, March 18, 2025 – A routine checkpoint operation by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) turned into an armed encounter, leading to the neutralization of two suspected gun runners in Barangay Old Maganoy, DAS, Maguindanao del Sur.
The incident occurred at approximately 9:15 AM when AFP personnel from the 33rd Infantry Battalion, Bravo Company, were conducting a checkpoint near the Barangay Hall of Kaya-Kaya, DAS. A white Suzuki minivan, bearing plate number MAN1169, reportedly hesitated to cross the checkpoint, raising suspicions among the AFP operatives. When personnel attempted to inspect the vehicle, the occupants accelerated, attempting to flee the area.
According to the AFP report, the suspects inside the van allegedly opened fire at the security forces, prompting the operatives to retaliate. A brief firefight ensued, resulting in the fatal wounding of two male suspects, identified as Norsalam Ulama and Norsama Muntok. Both individuals were reportedly businessmen and residents of Barangay Kakal, Ampatuan, Maguindanao del Sur.
Following the encounter, authorities secured the area and conducted a thorough investigation. Recovered from the scene were an M16A1 rifle with a loaded magazine of 5.56mm ammunition and a .45 caliber pistol with live rounds. These firearms are now under the custody of the RFU-BAR Maguindanao del Sur Field Unit, which conducted the Scene of the Crime Operation (SOCO) for proper documentation and further examination.
