In a significant step towards sustainability, SM City Mindpro has partnered with the Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) College of Agriculture to spearhead an organic fertilizer initiative. This Research, Development, and Extension (RDE) project aims to develop and produce organic fertilizer from kitchen waste sludge, demonstrating a commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable agriculture.

This collaboration addresses food waste management while promoting eco-friendly farming solutions. By repurposing kitchen waste from mall tenants into high-quality organic fertilizer, the initiative reduces landfill waste and supports a circular economy that benefits both the environment and local farmers.
“We are thrilled to partner with WMSU College of Agriculture on this meaningful initiative. This project not only aligns with SM’s sustainability goals but also strengthens our role in fostering greener communities. By turning food waste into organic fertilizer, we are demonstrating our commitment to responsible waste management and supporting local agricultural productivity,” said Engr. Rommel Bellen, Assistant Mall Manager of SM City Mindpro.
WMSU College of Agriculture, recognized for its expertise in sustainable farming, will provide technical guidance and research support. Faculty and students will play an active role in the development of the organic fertilizer, ensuring its quality and adherence to agricultural standards.
Dr. Elderico Tabal, Dean of the College of Agriculture, emphasized the significance of urban gardening and sustainable food production. “Urban gardening provides access to fresh and healthy food while contributing to environmental sustainability. Utilizing kitchen sludge organic fertilizer (KSOF) as a soil enhancer supports sustainable food production in urban areas. This initiative aligns with WMSU’s vision for a Green Campus and urban communities, as well as Zamboanga City’s Ordinance 637 on sustainable waste management.”
The organic fertilizer produced through this initiative is expected to benefit local farmers, urban gardeners, and other agricultural stakeholders by offering a natural alternative to chemical fertilizers. The project also aligns with SM’s Green Movement, a nationwide sustainability campaign across SM Malls.
This pioneering initiative underscores SM City Mindpro’s dedication to environmental conservation and community development. By transforming waste into valuable resources, the mall and its partners are paving the way for a more sustainable and resilient future.
