ZAMBOANGA CITY – In a bid to bolster local governance through sound fiscal management, the Philippine Association of Local Government Accountants (PhALGA) officially launched the 17th Mindanao Geographical Conference on Tuesday, February 25, at the Astoria Regency Convention Center.
With over 3,000 participants from Regions IX, XI, XII, and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), the conference carries the theme “Beyond Limits,” emphasizing the critical role of financial accountability in governance. The event serves as a platform for accountants and finance professionals to enhance their capacity in upholding transparency and efficiency in public service.
Running until February 27, 2025, the conference features sessions led by esteemed speakers covering diverse topics such as work-life balance, financial accountability, public finance, youth engagement, and election laws—all aimed at reinforcing sound financial management practices within Mindanao’s local government units (LGUs).
City Mayor John Dalipe, represented by City Administrator Atty. Wendell Sotto, lauded the participants for their dedication to integrity, transparency, and accountability in ensuring the financial stability of LGUs. He emphasized the crucial role of accountants and finance professionals in maintaining good governance.
Given the overwhelming participation, an additional conference was organized to accommodate another 4,000 attendees from Regions IX, X, and XIII. This parallel event is being held at the KCC Mall de Zamboanga from February 26 to 28, further expanding the reach of PhALGA’s advocacy for fiscal transparency and efficient governance.
PhALGA President Alma Libo-on warmly welcomed the participants, encouraging active engagement in the conference’s activities. She underscored the importance of fostering a culture of accountability and innovation among local government finance officers.
The opening day also saw Libo-on and the national officers recognizing key figures for their contributions to public finance and governance. Plaques of appreciation were awarded to Mayor Dalipe (through Atty. Sotto), SK National Federation President Carol Julianne “CJ” Dalipe, Department of Budget and Management (DBM) Director John Aries Macaspac, and other distinguished guests and speakers in acknowledgment of their valuable insights and support.
The 17th Mindanao Geographical Conference reaffirms PhALGA’s commitment to strengthening the financial management capabilities of local governments. By fostering collaboration among finance professionals, the event is poised to contribute to more effective governance and fiscal accountability across Mindanao.
