MARAWI CITY – The Bangsamoro Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources, and Energy (MENRE) has reinforced its commitment to sustainable waste management with the turnover of an Enviro-Asher unit to Marawi City on March 3, 2025. This marks the second deployment of the cutting-edge waste reduction technology, following the successful installation of the first unit in Cotabato City.
MENRE Minister Akmad A. Brahim emphasized the significance of this initiative in advancing environmental sustainability across the Bangsamoro region. “With the first unit deployed in Cotabato City just last week, providing another Enviro-Asher to Marawi City marks a major step toward reinforcing sustainable waste management across our communities. This initiative underscores our unwavering commitment to a cleaner and healthier Bangsamoro,” Minister Brahim stated.
The Enviro-Asher utilizes a state-of-the-art, non-combustion process to significantly reduce waste volume without requiring external fuel sources. This environmentally friendly technology prevents the emission of harmful gases, including dioxins and hazardous substances, making it a crucial addition to Marawi City’s waste management efforts.
Representing the City Government of Marawi, Project Management Office Director Sadiq Mohamad conveyed Mayor Atty. Majul Gandamra’s gratitude for the provision of the Enviro-Asher. He reaffirmed the city’s dedication to environmental sustainability, stating that with the new equipment, Marawi City must continue to innovate and uphold high standards to benefit future generations.
Bangsamoro Director General for ENR, Atty. Badr E. Salendab, described the turnover as a historic event and recognized MENRE’s role in improving Marawi City’s solid waste situation. He also expressed gratitude for the divine guidance in facilitating this initiative.
According to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ Total Projected Solid Waste Generation database, Marawi City accounts for approximately 27.8% of the total daily solid waste generation in Lanao del Sur, amounting to around 148 tons per day. This underscores the urgent need for innovative waste management solutions.
Bangsamoro Planning and Development Authority Director Kadil Jojo Sulaik Jr. commended Marawi’s local government unit for its proactive approach to environmental sustainability. Additionally, Environment Management Services Director Jalani M. Pamlian urged the public to actively participate in maintaining a cleaner city. “All these efforts begin in our homes,” he emphasized.
Funded under the Special Development Fund 2022, the deployment of the Enviro-Asher in Marawi City is a transformative step toward urban sustainability. By minimizing waste-related risks and promoting eco-friendly disposal, this technology is set to contribute significantly to a greener Bangsamoro. With proper utilization, the Enviro-Asher can serve as a game-changer in achieving a cleaner and healthier future for Marawi City.
