CAMP SIONGCO, Awang, DOS, Maguindanao del Norte – Four members of the Dawlah Islamiyah, including a high-value individual, were killed in a military encounter in Sitio Palao, Barangay Barira, Barira, Maguindanao del Norte on March 17, 2025.
According to Lt. Col. John A. Dela Cruz, commander of the Marine Battalion Landing Team 2 (MBLT-2), government forces clashed with local terrorist group members at around 5:45 a.m. The group was reportedly led by Emarudin Kasan Kulaw, alias ‘Alpha King,’ a recognized sub-leader of the Dawlah Islamiyah Hassan Group.
Among those killed were Mustapha Kasan Kulaw, alias Abu Saiden, a notorious member of the group; a certain alias Pudin, son of Alpha King; alias Abdullah; and another unidentified individual.
The military recovered several weapons and equipment from the group, including two M16 rifles, a .45 caliber pistol, various types of ammunition, magazines, two bandoliers, three cellphones, two anti-personnel mines, and other items.
Brigadier General Romulo D. Quemado II, commander of the 1st Marine Brigade, emphasized the military’s commitment to counter-terrorism operations to ensure peace and security in the region.
“This victory is proof of our soldiers’ dedication to eliminating threats to our nation’s security. We will not stop until the danger of terrorism is completely eradicated in our area,” Brig. Gen. Quemado stated.
Major General Donald M. Gumiran, commander of the 6th Infantry (Kampilan) Division and Joint Task Force Central, commended the troops for the successful operation. He also urged the remaining Dawlah Islamiyah members to surrender and reintegrate into society.
“Instead of continuing down the path of senseless violence, it would be better for you to return to the fold of the law and live peacefully. The government is ready to assist you and provide opportunities for a better future,” Maj. Gen. Gumiran said.
Meanwhile, concerns were raised by some residents regarding the nature of the operation, with claims that the individuals killed were unarmed and did not resist. Reports from the community suggest heightened tensions following the incident. Authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding these allegations.
The incident underscores the ongoing security challenges in the region and the government’s continuous efforts to combat terrorism while addressing concerns from local communities.
