TANDUBAS, TAWI-TAWI – A political campaign manager was brutally shot in broad daylight in Barangay Himba, Tandubas, Tawi-Tawi, raising concerns over escalating election-related violence in the Bangsamoro region. The victim, a staunch supporter of mayoralty candidate Hon. Rhomar S. Matolo, was gunned down with an M-16 rifle in front of the public, further deepening fears of instability as the elections approach.
This tragic incident follows a pattern of violence targeting Matolo’s camp. Earlier in February 2025, several of his supporters were also attacked, and reports of intimidation against the people of Tandubas have been persistent. Despite these challenges, the victims have continued to place their trust in the law and democratic processes.
The attack occurred shortly after the recent Peace Covenant signing, which was meant to ensure fair and violence-free elections. However, this latest killing underscores the apparent disregard for peace and justice in the municipality.
Pattern of Violence and Political Tensions
The violence in Tandubas is not an isolated case. In the previous barangay elections, armed men reportedly opened fire at Matolo’s residence, raising concerns about the safety of political candidates and their supporters. Despite the threats, Matolo’s camp has remained resolute in its commitment to peaceful electoral participation, calling for justice and swift action from authorities.
While the call for accountability grows, political tensions between rival groups have also escalated on social media. Accusations and counter-accusations have fueled public debate, with a recent statement from the people of Tandubas Municipality addressing claims made by Mayor Odet of Sapa-Sapa Municipality.
People of Tandubas Denounce False Accusations
In a clarification statement, concerned citizens of Tandubas Municipality condemned the allegations made by Mayor Odet in a social media post. The post reportedly accused Vice Mayor Rahiema of orchestrating the killing of a local individual named Habib and further claimed that the perpetrator, Dodong, was a relative of Mayor PJ.
The statement strongly refuted these claims, asserting that the incident stemmed from a personal family conflict between Dodong and Habib, with no political involvement. The people of Tandubas denounced the accusations as false and malicious, stating that such defamatory remarks violate the Revised Penal Code of the Philippines, specifically Article 353 on libel.
Furthermore, the statement demanded that Mayor Odet issue a public retraction of the claims and offer a formal public apology to Mayor PJ to clear his name. The people of Tandubas emphasized that failure to comply with this demand would result in legal action, including the filing of a criminal case for libel and civil claims for damages.
Call for Justice and Peaceful Elections
As election-related violence continues to grip Tandubas, local leaders and residents are urging authorities to take decisive action to prevent further bloodshed. They are calling for a thorough investigation into the killings and intimidation tactics used against political supporters.
With tensions running high, there is a growing demand for accountability from both law enforcement agencies and political leaders to ensure a fair and secure election process in Tawi-Tawi. The people of Tandubas reaffirm their commitment to upholding peace, democracy, and justice in the face of adversity.
