Basilan has seen a significant drop in crime incidence during the first two months of 2025 compared to the same period last year, according to Provincial Police Director Col. Cerrazid Umabong. The announcement was made during the first-quarter meeting of the joint Provincial Peace and Order Council (PPOC) and Provincial Anti-Drugs Abuse Council (PADAC) on Thursday, chaired by Governor Jim Salliman.
The military also confirmed the downward trend in crime, except for the ambush in Sumisip last month that resulted in the deaths of three soldiers and injuries to a dozen others. Authorities attributed most of the shooting incidents to long-standing family feuds, locally known as “rido.”
Official records show that at least 43 cases of “rido” were reported, with 34 of these conflicts successfully resolved through amicable settlement. Efforts to mediate such disputes have been crucial in maintaining peace and order in the province.
Security forces also briefed the PPOC on their coordinated efforts to ensure the upcoming national and local elections in May 2025 will be peaceful, orderly, and credible. BGen. Alvin Luzon, commander of the 101st Infantry Brigade, and Col. Umabong outlined security measures that will be implemented in the coming months.
Additionally, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and the Bureau of Fire Protection provided updates on their respective accomplishments. Their reports highlighted ongoing efforts to combat illegal drugs and enhance fire safety in the province.
The collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies, local government units, and community leaders continue to play a vital role in sustaining peace and stability in Basilan. Authorities remain committed to addressing security challenges while ensuring the safety and well-being of the people.
