CITY OF KORONADAL, South Cotabato – In a strong display of environmental commitment, more than 800 stakeholders from various sectors joined the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Region (DENR) 12 to advocate for wetlands conservation and ensure the protection and sustainable management of these vital ecosystems. The initiative was held in celebration of this year’s World Wetlands Day.

Atty. Felix S. Alicer, regional executive director of DENR-12, emphasized in a statement that the department spearheaded numerous activities across the region to reinforce wetlands conservation and highlight their crucial role in maintaining ecological balance and providing essential ecosystem benefits.
“The wetlands provide essential habitats for a wide range of plant and animal species. They also function as natural filters that improve water quality by capturing sediment and pollutants. Recognizing their importance is significant for sustainable development and biodiversity conservation,” RED Alicer stated.
With the theme “Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future,” the event gathered 831 participants, including representatives from local government units (LGUs), government agencies, private sector groups, communities, and other key stakeholders. Their collective efforts led to the removal of 896 kilograms of waste materials—primarily plastics—from various cleanup sites. Additionally, a total of 518 seedlings, including indigenous tree species, fruit-bearing trees, and mangroves, were planted in designated areas to enhance ecosystem resilience.
To further reinforce environmental awareness, DENR-12 also conducted various information drives aimed at educating the public on the significance of wetlands and the need for their preservation.
“Safeguarding and preserving these vital ecosystems requires the united effort of all stakeholders. We deeply appreciate the continued support of our partners in environmental protection and conservation,” RED Alicer added.
The observance of World Wetlands Day in the region underscores the collective responsibility in protecting these crucial ecosystems, ensuring they continue to provide ecological and economic benefits for future generations.
