For Dr. Mohammad Zeid M. Tungupon, RN, MD, DPBO, an ophthalmologist from Sulu, serving his fellow Tausugs is both an honor and a mission. Now a fully licensed eye specialist, he is determined to help those suffering from vision problems that affect their daily lives and livelihoods.
After completing his residency in ophthalmology at the Philippine General Hospital in 2023, Dr. Tungupon made a deliberate choice—to return to his home province and provide much-needed eye care services. His medical journey began at the University of the Philippines Manila, where he earned his medical degree in 2020. However, his passion for healthcare was evident even earlier, having first obtained a Nursing degree from Ateneo de Zamboanga University. His educational roots trace back to Notre Dame Grade School Jolo for elementary and Ateneo de Zamboanga University for high school.
Dr. Tungupon is keenly aware of the province’s long-standing lack of an eye specialist. The last ophthalmologist in Sulu left for overseas practice in the 1990s, leaving the province without a resident eye doctor for more than 25 years. His return marks a significant milestone in Sulu’s healthcare landscape.
To better serve his fellow Tausugs, he established the Suluphakia Eye Clinic, located at Green Mall in Barangay Walled City, Jolo. Aside from managing his private clinic, he also serves as an ophthalmologist at the Sulu Provincial Hospital (SPH) and Premier Medical Center in Zamboanga City.
His clinic operates from Wednesday to Saturday, 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM, while he is available at SPH on Friday and Saturday afternoons. In Zamboanga City, he attends to patients from Sunday to Tuesday.
Equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and affordable medical treatments, Dr. Tungupon’s clinic offers comprehensive eye care services, including surgeries for cataracts, pterygium, and glaucoma, which he performs at the hospital.
Beyond his professional duties, Dr. Tungupon is committed to helping those in need, especially underprivileged patients who cannot afford treatment. He also recognizes the increasing vision problems among younger generations due to excessive gadget use and aims to address these concerns through education and early intervention.
With his expertise, compassion, and dedication, Dr. Mohammad Zeid M. Tungupon is restoring sight and hope to the people of Sulu—one patient at a time.
