Davao City – Authorities successfully intercepted an appointed mayor from the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) and three other individuals at a checkpoint in Sirawan, Toril, Davao City, late evening on February 4, 2025. The operation was conducted by the Task Force in coordination with the Philippine National Police (PNP).
According to a report from the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) Station 8 in Toril, the individual identified as Special Geographic Area (SGA)-BARMM appointed Mayor Anwar Saluwang was found in possession of firearms and ammunition without the necessary legal documents. Additionally, he failed to present a Commission on Elections (COMELEC) gun ban exemption, which is strictly enforced during the election period.
Mayor Saluwang stated that he and his companions were en route to attend a training on Efficient Fund Management at Acacia Hotel, scheduled for February 6, 2025, alongside other mayors from SGA-BARMM.
The arrested individuals are currently in police custody pending further legal proceedings. They are expected to face charges for violating Republic Act No. 10591, also known as the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act, and the Omnibus Election Code of the Philippines.
