The Municipality of Tantangan, South Cotabato, marked its 64th Founding Anniversary and 15th Kulitangtang Festival with a tree-growing festival on January 24, 2025. The event, held behind the Municipal Gym in Poblacion, was a collaborative effort between the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) Banga and the Municipal ENRO of Tantangan.
During the activity, at least 500 seedlings were planted, comprising 250 Mahogany and 250 Narra trees. The initiative underscored the government’s commitment to carbon sequestration and climate change mitigation. Participants included personnel from CENRO Banga, the Municipal ENRO, members of the League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP – South Cotabato Chapter), the Philippine League of Local Environment and Natural Resources Officers (PLLENRO) South Cotabato Chapter, and the Local Government Unit of Tantangan.
In a related effort, DENR 12 – CENRO Kiamba inspected the Siguil Hydro Power Corporation (SHPC) on January 22, 2025. The visit aimed to strengthen SHPC’s tree replacement initiative and resulted in a commitment from CENRO to provide additional seedlings to support and enhance the program. The inspection also encouraged SHPC to expand its designated tree-planting areas, further solidifying the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) that focuses on conserving water and land resources.
These initiatives highlight the importance of collaboration between government agencies, private entities, and local communities in promoting environmental sustainability and combating the effects of climate change.
