Malamawi, Isabela City — Tragedy struck on Sunday, the first day of the nationwide election gun ban, when a student was killed and another wounded in a gun attack in Purok 2, Barangay Tampalan, Malamawi, Isabela City de Basilan.

The fatality was identified as Eddie Badli Sauragal, 21, while the wounded student was Hamudi Mohammad, 18. Both victims were reportedly walking in the barangay around 10 p.m. when an unidentified assailant opened fire on them.

The Isabela City Police Station, under its newly designated chief, Lt. Col. Raymond Sanson, is leading the investigation into the incident. Initial findings suggest that the attack may have been motivated by illegal drugs or a personal grudge.

“This is a concerning incident, especially as it coincides with the start of the election gun ban,” Lt. Col. Sanson said in a statement. “Our team is working diligently to uncover the truth and bring the perpetrator to justice.”

This shooting marks the first such incident in Isabela City during the election period and the third for the New Year, raising alarms about public safety and the implementation of the gun ban.

Authorities are urging the public to provide any information that could assist in the investigation. Community leaders have also called for heightened vigilance and cooperation with law enforcement to ensure peace and security during the election season.
