Maitum, Sarangani – In a significant operation underscoring the ongoing crackdown on smuggling, the Maitum Municipal Police Station (MPS), in collaboration with the STTA-RID 12, 2nd Sarangani Provincial Mobile Force Company (SPMFC), and Tracker Team Foxtrot, successfully intercepted smuggled cigarettes valued at an estimated Php 550,000. The operation took place on the evening of January 10, 2025.
The operation was initiated following a tip from a concerned citizen reporting suspicious unattended boxes at a waiting shed along the barangay road in Brgy. Mabay. Acting swiftly, a patrol team from Maitum MPS was dispatched to verify the report. Upon arriving at the location, they confirmed the presence of the boxes and inspected them in the presence of a Barangay Mabay official. The inspection uncovered 149 reams of assorted smuggled cigarettes.
Local witnesses identified the suspected owner of the contraband as an individual known only by the alias “Nik,” a resident of Brgy. Sison, Maitum. However, the suspect remains at large as of this writing.
The confiscated items were transported to the Maitum Municipal Police Station for proper documentation and disposition. Authorities have announced plans to file charges against the suspect for violating Republic Act No. 10863, also known as the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act.
Maitum MPS emphasized its unwavering commitment to curbing illegal activities and ensuring the safety and security of the community. “This successful operation highlights the importance of community involvement in reporting suspicious activities,” said a police spokesperson. “We urge citizens to remain vigilant and work hand-in-hand with law enforcement to maintain peace and order in our municipality.”
The incident underscores the importance of collaborative efforts between law enforcement agencies and the community in addressing smuggling and other illegal activities. Investigations are ongoing to locate and apprehend the suspect.
