Maguindanao del Sur – Political rivals from the towns of Talitay, Northern Kabuntalan, and Datu Odin Sinsuat in Maguindanao Del Norte have united to support the appeal of the Commission on Elections (COMELEC), the 6th Infantry (KAMPILAN) Division, and the Philippine National Police (PNP-PRO-BARMM) to ensure safe and peaceful elections in the province.
The unity was a highlight of the Political Candidates’ Forum held on January 24, 2025, at the 1st Mechanized (Lakan) Battalion Station in Barangay Midtimbang, Datu Anggal Midtimbang, Maguindanao del Sur. The forum was spearheaded by the 6th Infantry (KAMPILAN) Division under the leadership of Lt. Gen. Antonio G. Nafarrete, in collaboration with the 601st Brigade, the Office of the Provincial Election Supervisor of Maguindanao del Norte, the PNP, the Nonviolent Peaceforce, the Ministry of Peace and Order Security (MPOS-BARMM), the 6th Civil-Military Operations Battalion, and other partner organizations.
Candidates for mayor and vice mayor, accompanied by their supporters, pledged to uphold fair, safe, and clean elections during the campaign period, voting day, and the announcement of results. Their commitment was underscored by symbolic gestures such as handshakes, hugs, an oath-taking ceremony, and the signing of a peace covenant.
The forum comes in response to concerns about some barangays in the participating towns being classified as red and orange zones—areas requiring special attention due to prior election-related violence. However, Col. Ricky Bunayog, Acting Commander of the 601st Infantry Brigade, expressed optimism that cooperation among political candidates and citizens could move these areas to the green category, signifying peace and stability.
The event was attended by key officials and stakeholders, including Lt. Col. Robert Betita (Commanding Officer of the 1st Mechanized Battalion), Atty. Mohammad Nabil Mutia (Provincial Election Supervisor of Maguindanao del Norte), MPOS-BARMM representative Abdul Najid Nagamura, Lt. Col. Lester Mark Baky (Commanding Officer of MBLT5), Police Lt. Col. Julhamin Asdani (Deputy Provincial Director), Lt. Col. Roden Orbon (Commanding Officer of the 6th CMO Battalion and Spokesperson of the 6th Infantry Division), Tamano Diolaten (Election Officer of Talitay), members of the media, and other officials.
“The success of peaceful elections rests on our collective efforts,” said Col. Bunayog. “Through the cooperation of candidates and citizens, we can create a safe and harmonious environment for everyone.”
The 6th Infantry (KAMPILAN) Division continues to appeal for the active participation of political candidates and their supporters to safeguard the safety and well-being of the public throughout the election period. This forum serves as a beacon of unity and peace, ensuring that the electoral process reflects the will of the people in a secure and orderly manner.
