In an effort to enhance the efficiency of the criminal justice system in Lanao del Sur, key stakeholders from various sectors recently convened for a conference organized by the Provincial Legal Services Office. The event served as a platform to address pressing issues and foster collaboration among the five pillars of the criminal justice system: law enforcement, prosecution, judiciary, corrections, and the community.

The forum brought together representatives from law enforcement, legal practitioners, government agencies, and community leaders, all committed to improving coordination and communication within the justice system. Discussions centered on finding practical solutions to systemic challenges and promoting a unified approach to justice administration.

Unified Approach Highlighted

Judge Sittie Laarni Umpa of the Regional Trial Court Branch 9 underscored the importance of collaboration among agencies. “For the five pillars of the criminal justice system to work properly, there should be coordination, communication, and working together of the different agencies in the five pillars of the criminal justice system. So this seminar-workshop is very significant because it allows everyone to exchange ideas and find solutions to challenges we encounter in doing our jobs,” she said.

Judge Umpa also highlighted the Supreme Court’s Strategic Plan for Judicial Innovations (SPJI), an initiative aimed at enhancing judicial transparency and efficiency nationwide. She noted the establishment of justice zones in key areas as part of these reforms, designed to improve service delivery and streamline judicial processes.

Commitment from Provincial Leadership

Provincial Governor Mamintal Adiong Jr., through a message delivered by Board Member Ansari Gandrama, reiterated the province’s dedication to improving the justice system. “We recognize the need to continually improve our justice system. Strengthening legal awareness and public confidence is crucial to ensuring that our judicial institutions operate in a neutral, efficient, and professional manner,” Adiong’s message stated.

Addressing Grassroots Challenges

Lawyer Faisal Cali, head of the Provincial Legal Services Office, emphasized the need for collective action in addressing challenges within the justice system. “We cannot solve issues and concerns alone because criminal justice is a system. We have to move forward together, not as an independent organization,” he said.

One of the key topics discussed was the amicable settlement of rido (family feuds), a significant issue in the region. Participants reviewed a proposed ordinance aimed at resolving these disputes and fostering peace-building initiatives in Lanao del Sur.

Towards a Stronger Justice System

The conference marked a significant step forward in uniting stakeholders to tackle the multifaceted challenges of the criminal justice system. By focusing on collaboration, judicial reforms, and community-based approaches, Lanao del Sur is poised to build a more efficient and transparent justice system that serves its people effectively.
