Cagayan de Oro City — The Cagayan de Oro City Hall is set to update its Comprehensive Land Use Plan (CLUP) this week to reflect major urban development projects within the city’s central business district.
This initiative follows a high-level meeting last Friday, January 24, between the City Planning and Development Office (CPDO), department managers from City Hall, representatives from national government agencies, and the Regional Development Council (RDC-10)’s Land Use Committee.
Key discussions during the meeting revolved around plans to optimize land use and enhance infrastructure in the city to address rapid urbanization and improve economic opportunities.
Regional Development Plans
National Economic Development Authority (NEDA-10) Regional Director Mylah Faye Cariño highlighted the planned establishment of a northern Mindanao regional government center near Laguindingan Airport. The initiative aims to relocate several government offices closer to the airport, aligning with the anticipated takeover of the airport’s management by Aboitiz InfraCapital Inc. later this year.
“This move is expected to promote regional integration and ease congestion in the city’s central business district,” Cariño said.
Capitol Compound Development
Another significant development discussed was the P2.5-billion joint venture agreement between the Provincial Capitol of Misamis Oriental and A. Brown Co. Inc. The project seeks to transform part of the Capitol compound into a mixed-use complex, further redistributing economic activity in the region.
Cariño emphasized that relocating some government offices to Misamis Oriental will help decongest the city center while fostering economic growth in neighboring areas.
Workshop and Updates to the CLUP
Cariño urged the CPDO and relevant City Hall departments to collaborate with the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) in a workshop to refine the development strategies for the city’s central business district.
The revisions aim to maximize the area’s potential by incorporating provisions for livable spaces and commercial development while addressing challenges posed by the city’s growing population and urban sprawl.
City Hall’s proactive updates to the CLUP underscore its commitment to sustainable urban planning and balanced regional development, ensuring that Cagayan de Oro remains a thriving hub in northern Mindanao.
As the city adjusts to these transformative projects, local stakeholders remain optimistic about the potential for long-term economic benefits and improved quality of life for its residents.
