LEBAK, SULTAN KUDARAT — Three members of the New People’s Army (NPA) surrendered to the 37th Infantry (Conqueror) Battalion under the leadership of Lt. Col. Christopherson M. Capuyan on November 29, 2024. The formal presentation of the former rebels took place at the 37th Infantry Battalion Headquarters, Camp Gen. Cesar Betita, Barangay Tibpuan, Lebak.

The surrender was witnessed by Brig. Gen. Michael A. Santos, Commander of the 603rd (Persuader) Brigade; Hon. Joaquin T. Concha, Mayor of Kalamansig; and representatives from other government security agencies.

The former rebels were identified as:

  • Alias Asay/Star: Member of the Executive Committee, Sub-Regional Committee (SRC) Daguma, Far South Mindanao Region (FSMR).
  • Alias Jabbar/Tamyon: Member of Gilbeys Platoon.
  • Alias Jen: Member of the 1st Squad, Platoon Cherry Mobile, SRC Daguma, FSMR.

They surrendered with one M16 rifle and two M1 Garand rifles. According to the former rebels, their decision to return to the fold of the law stemmed from hardships, unfulfilled promises from the NPA, and longing for their families. The surrender was facilitated through the concerted efforts and negotiations of the military.

The local government of Kalamansig immediately provided financial aid and food support to the former rebels. Their documentation is currently being processed for enrollment in the government’s Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP), which offers various benefits to former insurgents.

Mayor Concha commended the military’s efforts in creating pathways for peace and ensuring that former rebels are given hope and a chance to start anew.

“The government will never abandon our Friends Rescued. Instead, we will help them rebuild their lives and reunite with their families,” Mayor Concha said.

Brig. Gen. Santos expressed gratitude to the former rebels for choosing the path of peace and reintegration into society. He also encouraged them to reach out to others who may still be in hiding, urging them to surrender and begin a peaceful life, especially as the Christmas season and New Year approach.

The surrender underscores the government’s commitment to fostering peace and reconciliation in conflict-affected areas of Sultan Kudarat and beyond.
