Koronadal City, Philippines — The Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) Region XII convened the South Cotabato Airshed Governing Board on November 27, 2024, bringing together key stakeholders to strengthen air quality management efforts across the airshed.

Held in Koronadal City, the meeting drew participation from diverse sectors, including the Department of Health (DOH) XII, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) XII, Land Transportation Office (LTO) XII, the Provincial Government Unit of South Cotabato, and representatives from local government units (LGUs) of Koronadal, Tupi, Tboli, Norala, Tantangan, Polomolok, General Santos City, and Tampakan. Civil society organizations, such as the Coalition on Social Development Organization – South Cotabato, also contributed to the dialogue.

The board focused on refining policies and strategies to mitigate air pollution while promoting sustainable environmental management. Emphasis was placed on a coordinated approach to address air quality issues, safeguard public health, and achieve ecological balance within the airshed.

“Collaboration is key to addressing air quality challenges. This meeting is a testament to our collective commitment to ensuring cleaner air for South Cotabato’s residents,” an EMB XII representative stated.

Stakeholders reviewed ongoing programs and explored innovative solutions, reaffirming the province’s proactive stance in environmental governance. Discussions included enhancing emission monitoring systems, supporting green technology adoption, and promoting public awareness campaigns about air quality and its impact on health.

The South Cotabato Airshed Governing Board also highlighted the alignment of its initiatives with regional and national environmental goals, ensuring compliance with the Clean Air Act and other regulatory frameworks.

By fostering a unified effort among government agencies, LGUs, and civil society, the board underscored the importance of shared responsibility in achieving cleaner air and sustainable growth.

The meeting concluded with renewed commitments to advance clean air initiatives, emphasizing the need for sustained cooperation to protect South Cotabato’s environment and promote a healthier, more resilient community.
