Three Members of Daulah Islamiyah – Hassan Group Return to Government Fold in Carmen, Cotabato

October 30, 2024 – Carmen, Cotabato

In a significant step towards peace, the Local Government of Carmen, Cotabato, warmly welcomed three former members and supporters of the Daulah Islamiyah – Hassan Group (DI-HG) back to the government fold. The ceremony, known as the “Presentation of Balik-Loob,” was held at the 602nd Infantry Brigade headquarters, Camp Locero, in Poblacion, Carmen, Cotabato, and organized by the 90th Infantry (Bigkis-Lahi) Battalion of the 6th Infantry Division, Philippine Army.

The three individuals, identified by aliases “Marco,” “Midnight,” and “DTR,” surrendered alongside their firearms, including two M14 rifles and one M1 Carbine rifle. This gesture symbolizes their sincerity in renouncing their affiliations and committing to peaceful lives under the protection and support of the Philippine government.

According to the returnees, their decision stemmed from a desire for peace and a fresh start with their families, motivated by the hardships endured within the DI-HG and a growing disillusionment with the group’s destructive ideology. They expressed gratitude for the government’s openness and support, acknowledging that their faith had guided them back toward this path. They also thanked the Local Government of Carmen for its assistance in helping them begin new lives and pledged to support government initiatives.

The ceremony was led by Brigadier General Donald M. Gumiran, Commander of the 602nd Brigade, with additional attendance from 90IB Executive Officer Lt. Col. Rowel C. Caacbay and Municipal Administrator Hon. Moises C. Anderain, representing the Local Government of Carmen. Other attendees included Lt. Col. Erwin Jay E. Dumaghan, Executive Officer of the 602nd Brigade; Maj. James Carl M. Teaño, Commanding Officer of the 2nd Civil-Military Operations Company; and Hon. Renaldo T. Camique, Barangay Chairman of Tonganon.

The Local Government of Carmen also offered initial financial aid, rice provisions, and promised further livelihood assistance to support the former DI-HG members in their reintegration. This compassionate response exemplifies the government’s dedication to rehabilitating and supporting those willing to abandon the path of violence.

Lt. Col. Rowel E. Gavilanes, Commanding Officer of the 90th Infantry Battalion, commended the individuals for their brave decision, stating that their return serves as a testament to the government’s sincere commitment to peace and stability. He further encouraged other members of Daulah Islamiyah to leave behind the cycle of violence and seek a peaceful life.

“The doors of the 90th Infantry Battalion will always be open to those who wish to rebuild their lives and rejoin society, fostering peace for their families and contributing to the community’s growth and harmony,” Lt. Col. Gavilanes affirmed.
