Farmers in Davao Oriental Receive Modern Agricultural Machinery to Boost Rice Production

Davao Oriental, Philippines – Hundreds of farmers from 14 Farmers’ Cooperatives and Associations (FCAs) in Davao Oriental received state-of-the-art agricultural machinery and equipment on November 21, 2024. This initiative, valued at approximately ₱40 million, is expected to revolutionize rice production and further develop the province’s agricultural sector.

Funded under the Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund (RCEF) Mechanization Program of the Philippine Center for Postharvest Development and Mechanization (PHilMech), the equipment was distributed in a ceremonial turnover held at the Provincial Capitol. Among the machinery awarded were four-wheel tractors, driven disc plows, levee makers, hand tractors, floating tillers, precision rice seeders, transplanters, harvesters, recirculating dryers, and rice mills.

Strengthening Agriculture in Davao Oriental

Since 2019, the province has received agricultural equipment worth over ₱375.8 million under the RCEF Mechanization Program. As one of the region’s largest rice producers, Davao Oriental is a significant beneficiary of this initiative, aimed at enhancing rice production and aiding farmers’ recovery from calamities.

Governor Niño Uy, in his message during the turnover ceremony, expressed his gratitude and optimism, calling the event a major milestone for the province. “The challenge lies in sustaining all government interventions,” Uy emphasized, urging the farmers to maximize the use of the equipment to ensure long-term development in the sector.

Leveraging Modern Technology for Progress

The RCEF Mechanization Program envisions reducing production costs and minimizing post-harvest losses through modern agricultural tools and technology. This, in turn, is expected to increase farmers’ income and improve their competitiveness in the market.

Dr. Rogelio Idago and Engr. Lorenzo Bermillo of the Department of Agriculture (DA) and PHilMech commended the farmers for their warm reception of the program and pledged continued support. Both officials underscored the importance of maintaining the machinery to prolong its benefits.

Additionally, Senator Cynthia Villar, a staunch advocate of farm mechanization, conveyed her support for expanding the program in the coming years.

A Commitment to Agricultural Sustainability

The turnover ceremony showcased the unwavering commitment of both local and national governments to the farming community. It highlighted the shared vision of revitalizing the agricultural sector in Davao Oriental, ensuring its resilience and productivity for years to come.

As the farmers embrace these new tools, they carry the hope of transforming their livelihoods and paving the way for a more sustainable and prosperous future in agriculture.
