In a significant step towards uplifting marginalized communities, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office XI has extended vital support to the La Paz Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP) Association. On November 13, 2024, the department turned over P375,000 worth of fishing boats and equipment to the association in Barangay La Paz, Carmen, Davao del Norte.
The La Paz SLP Association, composed of 25 dedicated members, is now equipped with the tools to transform their fishing activities into more sustainable and profitable ventures. This initiative underscores DSWD’s commitment to empowering local fisherfolk and fostering economic productivity in coastal communities.
A Lifeline for Fisherfolk
Fishing has long been a primary source of livelihood for the people of Barangay La Paz. However, limited resources and outdated equipment often hinder their capacity to maximize their catch. The newly provided fishing boats and equipment aim to address these challenges, enabling fisherfolk to increase their daily catch and secure a more stable income.
For many families, this assistance is a game-changer. With a reliable source of livelihood, they can better meet their basic needs, invest in their children’s education, and improve their overall quality of life.
Promoting Sustainability
Beyond economic benefits, the initiative promotes sustainable fishing practices—a crucial measure in preserving marine resources. The introduction of better fishing equipment is expected to encourage more responsible fishing techniques, ensuring that resources remain abundant for future generations.
Strengthening Community Resilience
DSWD’s Sustainable Livelihood Program seeks to build resilient communities by addressing poverty through livelihood assistance. The support extended to the La Paz SLP Association is a testament to the program’s commitment to fostering self-reliance among marginalized groups.
The department emphasized that this initiative aligns with its broader mission of enabling communities to break free from the cycle of poverty and achieve economic independence.
A Brighter Future for Barangay La Paz
The turn-over ceremony marked a hopeful milestone for the members of the La Paz SLP Association. As they embark on this journey with new resources and skills, their prospects for a better future have significantly improved.
DSWD Field Office XI’s gesture goes beyond providing material assistance—it symbolizes the department’s unwavering dedication to nurturing inclusive and sustainable development in the region.
With empowered fisherfolk leading the way, Barangay La Paz is set to become a beacon of resilience and progress in Davao del Norte.
