November 14, 2024 — A checkpoint operation conducted by the Bacolod-Kalawi Municipal Police Station (MPS) in Lanao del Sur led to the interception of smuggled cigarettes valued at over ₱1.14 million and the arrest of two suspects.
The operation, carried out along the Narciso Ramos Highway in Barangay Bubong, Bacolod-Kalawi, at around 6:30 AM, was hailed as a significant success by Police Colonel Robert S. Daculan, Provincial Director of the Lanao del Sur Police Provincial Office.
During the operation, a Toyota Revo with plate number WTX 529 was stopped while traveling from Malabang to Marawi City. Upon inspection, officers discovered 20 boxes of smuggled cigarettes, including brands such as San Marino Red, San Marino White, and Fort.
The confiscated contraband has an estimated market value of ₱1,140,000. The two individuals found in the vehicle were promptly arrested and taken to Bacolod-Kalawi MPS, along with the seized cigarettes, for further investigation and appropriate legal action.
Colonel Daculan praised the vigilance and dedication of the Bacolod-Kalawi MPS personnel, emphasizing the importance of consistent efforts to combat smuggling activities in the province.
“This operation underscores our commitment to safeguarding the economic interests of the public and ensuring that illegal activities are curtailed,” Daculan stated.
The suspects now face potential charges under the relevant anti-smuggling and customs laws, while authorities continue to monitor and address the prevalence of smuggling in the region.
The checkpoint operation highlights the ongoing collaboration between law enforcement agencies and local authorities in Lanao del Sur to protect public welfare and combat illicit trade.
